So this post if about our first three days in London. We arrived at about 9am into Luton airport and from there we got a bus to the train station and then a train to the St Pancreas station and it was here that Nell and Simon met us. Nell works for Ewen's uncle (Andrew) and this is who we are staying with for the majority of the time we are in London. They gave us some keys, a couple of maps and directions for the tube and off we went in search of their apartment. It is only a 5 minute walk from the Angel tube station which is handy and very close to lots of shops, pubs and supermarkets. Our first day we settled in and then went to Shepherds Bush to go shopping at Westfield (i had heard it was the biggest shopping centre in Europe. It wasn't that big at all though. there are much bigger centers in Melbourne) for winter clothes. We spent a few hours there before heading back to Islington (the name of the town we are staying) for an early night after our 4.30am wake up that morning.
The next day we had decided to go to Oxford street mainly to hit up Primark. Primark is a clothing store that is ridiculously cheap and ridiculously busy. i will have to go back to take some photos of the crowds. i lined up for probably 20 minutes to try clothes on (to be fair the line moved pretty quickly considering how many people were in) and you had to fight your way to the clothes racks to get what you wanted. I have never seen anything like it. It wasn't even the weekend but the store was busier than Myer on Boxing day. After Primark we walked along Oxford street for a while going in and out of shops. we went into Selfridges to escape the rain (this store was named worlds best department store this year) but we couldn't afford anything. it was fun to walk around though and admire the decadence. We went home not long after that.
The next day was our first day of sightseeing. We got the tube to Tower Hill station so we could walk across the Tower Bridge and then later we walked across London Bridge (far less impressive). We also went to Borough market which was an incredible food market selling all kinds of things from delicious smelling soups to sangria (i had some, it was OK but not as good as the stuff i had in Spain) to fruit and veg (we got some to have for dinner) to gourmet pies (we got some of these for our dinner too). they had stalls selling different types of butter, butchers, fudge stalls, lots of cheese stalls, it was awesome. sadly we had just had a quick lunch of chips before going to the market so we ended up going back to the market later that afternoon to get things to cook for out dinner. After the market we walked along the Thames and saw Shakespeare's Globe theater and the millennium bridge (which used to wobble side to side before they fixed it) and just as it started to rain we were passing the Tate Modern so we decided to go in. The Tate Modern is full of modern art. some interesting but mostly ridiculous (in my opinion anyway). I've put in some photos of some of the art for you to look at. After the Tate we went back to Borough market and then headed back to the apartment to eat our delicious vegies and pies for dinner.
