We spent nearly a full day exploring the gardens and palace of Versailles. The Palace of Versailles was the official residence of the Kings of France from 1682 until 1790. It is a very impressive building from both the outside and inside.
When we first arrived (around 12pm) we couldn't believe the cues to get into the palace, it must have been at least 300 people in the line. it took us a little while to figure the situation out because there was this ginormous line and then a line of about 50 or so people on the other side of the square in front of the palace. turns out the massive line was people who already had tickets and were simply lining up to get into the actual palace the other line was where you had to go to buy your tickets. ridiculous system but oh well it must work for them. we ended up buying the expensive ticket (25 euros each) that allowed you entry into everything including the gardens, Marie Antoinettes little side house, the village and the actual palace. We spent several hours wandering around the gardens admiring the many fountains and hedge maze like walk ways (while trying to avoid the rain whenever possible.
Marie-Antoinette used to escape from the stifling royal court life in Paris to Versailles, from the stifling court life of the Grand Château de Versailles to the Grand Trianon, and from the stifling court life of the Grand Trianon to the Petit Trianon. Still feeling stifled, she ordered her architect, Richard Mique, and court painter Hubert Robert, to design a hameau (hamlet, village) to remind her of her native Austria. This village was incredible, the houses were so quaint and bizarre! running through the village was a stream full of hundreds of carp all with their mouths opening and closing gaping at tourists as if begging for food. Also in the village were vegie patches and grape vines growing over archways. back in the day peacocks and other farm animals used to roam around the village. these days there were a couple of sheep in a field and a random bull all on his lonesome.
At about 4pm we went and lined up to get into the palaces, luckily the line was about a third of the length it was a few hours before and after about 15 minutes we were in the door. included in our ticket price was an audio guide so we had the
pleasure of listening to a man tell us all about the crazy Japanese art that accompanied the tradition pieces in each room. The artwork is a bit of a controversy at the moment with a lot of people not agreeing to them been in the palace. i can kind of see their point, they don't really fit in with the decor. The audio guide man kept trying to compare the modern artworks with the artworks in the palace and trying to justify why they belonged in each room of the Versailles palace.
We left at about 6pm to get the train home. At the station the cues were really long to buy your tickets and after about 20 minutes the staff started yelling in french and everyone got very excited and started running to the trains, ignoring the ticket barriers and not buying tickets. we had no idea what was happening so went to the now empty ticket machines and got out train ticket we were then rushed onto a waiting train that had police guarding the front of it. it was all very very
strange. in the back of my mind i suspected a terrorist threat but i think they were just trying to get the station cleared of the hundreds of people. Interestingly while we were in Paris there were two suspected bomb threats at metro stations and
they had to evacuate everyone. luckily we were never around when that was happening!
